Brad Tilley is a household name in historic racing in Australia. For years he dominated in his green Falcon GTHO in the Touring Car Masters series. That car is undergoing a rebuild in his Northern Beaches workshop and in the mean time he is busy behind the wheel of his ’66 Mustang.
Not long ago he took the small block vee-eight to Mt Panorama to race against bigger block/bigger horse power historic racers…and he came away with three races-three wins. A great achievement.
We caught up with Brad at Sydney Motorsport Park for the Classic Speed Festival. It was an historic day, he was racing against his son Jamie for the first time. Usually they share the ‘stang but this time he had an opportunity to drive one of his customer cars, the Ford Mustang of Michael Rose.
Also at the track were two other cars looked after by Brad: a beautiful Shelby Mustang and an equally attractive Valiant Charger. Owned by Terry Lawlor and Craig Robertson. The Tilley, Rose and Robertson cars raced in Group N and the Lawlor Shelby competed in Group S.
Brad was introduced to Anglomoil lubricants in 2016 and now recommends them to his customers,
“Yes, I did use Anglomoil in my own car, it is the RASYN GT R 60 engine oil. In Michael Rose’s car I used RASYN GT60 and the same in the Charger. Terry’s Shelby used RASYN GT40.”
“To race against Jamie was something that I wanted to do for a long time and it was such a great feeling to be able to do our chosen sport and compete in the same category. ”
“The fact that he beat me twice, I have no problem with and will do anything to see him succeed, and all the thanks should go to Michael Rose for allowing me to use his car and making this happen for us. It was also a huge achievement for me and my staff at Tilley Racing to produce cars that achieve such a high result.”
The weekend was dominated by Tilley entries:
Jamie recorded the fastest lap time in every race he ran in, and he finished second outright for the weekend. In two of the three races the apprentice beat the master across the line.
Terry Lawlor achieved a new lap record in his Shelby and scored a win in Group SB for the weekend and second outright in the Group S endurance race.
Brad Tilley (Michael Rose Mustang) achieved a new lap record for the NB class, qualified on the front row of the grid despite not having driven the car before, Was the outright winner in Group N, and also came first Group NB for the weekend.
